Data stored

Economics Job Market Rumors (EJMR) maintains a database for storing of posts, threads, votes and users accounts.

EJMR allows you to post anonymously whereby your post enters the database without a record of personally identifiable information like your IP or email address. However to prevent users from voting for themselves and to help users maintain the same 4 letter indentity within a thread one way encryption is used to create a 4 letter identity. This is a combination of random strings and the user's IP address which is one way encrypted and then sliced up to create a 4 letter ID which is stored in the database. This formula is also changed over time and means you are unable to reverse engineer the IP address from the 4 letter identity.

If the website comes under attack from malicious activity such as spamming or denial of service attempts then IP tracking may need to be turned on temporarily to combat the problem. However, a bot is used to automatically delete IP addresses that are older than a few hours to preserve anonymity
